Princess Diana once asked heart transplant pioneer Dr. Christiaan Barnard to help her and her then-sweetheart — a leading British-based heart surgeon — move to South Africa, London’s Sunday Times reported. In October 1996, Diana told Barnard about her love for Hasnat Khan and asked Barnard to help Khan find a job in Cape Town, Barnard told the newspaper. Cape Town is Barnard’s home town and where Diana’s brother, Earl Charles Spencer, also maintains a residence. Diana’s relationship with Khan foundered, Barnard said, because the beau “could not handle the publicity of living with Diana.”
