Actress Laura Dern, 31, will receive the annual Piper-Heidsick Tribute for “independent vision” at next January’s Sundance Film Festival in snowy Utah. Past recipients have included Gena Rowlands, Nicolas Cage, John Turturro and Frances McDormand. The daughter of Bruce Dern and Diane Ladd, Dern made her screen debut in 1974’s “Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore” (which co-starred Ladd) and followed with teenage roles in “Foxes” and “Teachers.” She received her first major critical acclaim when the Los Angeles Film Critics presented her with its New Generation prize for her performance in 1985’s “Smooth Talk.”
