How Stars Date (and Separate) Over Social Media
1. THE INTRODUCTION
When Detroit Pistons center Andre Drummond wanted to reach out to his crush, iCarly star Jennette McCurdy, he turned to Instagram, where he began posting photos of McCurdy under the hashtag #WCW (woman crush Wednesday). The flattery paid off when the blonde beauty Tweeted at him, "Nice to meet you" – and soon, a relationship was born. The two finally met, and shared their delight over – what else? – Instagram.
2. THE FIRST (PUBLIC) KISS
The universe released a collective "awwwww" when Hilary Duff posted an adorable photo of herself smooching personal trainer Jason Walsh, captioning the pic, "Date night with J." Romance rumors first started buzzing around the Younger star and Walsh after they were spotted partying together in summer 2015. Duff finalized her divorce from former NHL player Mike Comrie in February.
3. MAKING IT OFFICIAL
until they could make it Instagram official. "My date and I," he captioned a sweet black-and-white snap of the couple at the show's premiere, finally confirming what we'd all known for months.
4. BECOMING INCREASINGLY COMFORTABLE WITH SDA
Amy Schumer and her hot carpenter boyfriend, Ben Hanisch, are clearly winning the Social Displays of Affection game (in addition to our hearts). Hanisch captioned a photo of the two of them together: "Sometimes in life you get extremely lucky, and the smartest, funniest, most beautiful woman comes along when you least expect it. Here's to what adventures 2016 brings!"
5. GETTING ENGAGED
Good news spreads fast, especially in the case of tennis pro Novak Djokovic, who revealed over Instagram that he had proposed to longtime love Jelena Ristic. "We're ENGAGED!!! Getting used to introducing Jelena as my fiancé and future wife," he wrote, sharing a loved-up photo of the pair. "Couldn't be happier."
6. TYING THE KNOT
It's not a wedding without 200,000 of your closest followers! Only a day after marrying John Legend, model Chrissy Teigen didn't hesitate to share her wedding gown with her fans, posting a photo of herself in the strapless, ivory Vera Wang creation to her Instagram account. A shot of the newlyweds at their reception and on their honeymoon quickly followed.
7. HITTING A ROUGH PATCH
8. SAYING BYE, BYE, BYE
9. BREAKING THE BIG NEWS
"This is the hardest thing I've ever done in my life," Jake Owen said on Twitter when announcing his split from Lacey, his wife of three years (he even included his official statement in a Tweet, left). Why? "I wanted to let my fans know how much I've appreciated their support of not only my career, but my family as a whole."
10. MOVING ON
Following Demi Moore's November 2011 announcement that she was divorcing Ashton Kutcher, all attention turned to her Twitter handle – @MrsKutcher. "Changing my twitter name isn't a top priority right now," she Tweeted that December, but by May 2012, the actress had settled on @justdemi. "So hard finding a name that was fun somewhat playful and available," she wrote.
11. SHUTTING DOWN THE RUMORS
After NBA player Matt Barnes fueled rumors of a relationship with Rihanna by telling TMZ he had "passed the crush stage" with the "Bitch Better Have My Money" singer, she quickly took to Instagram to defend her single status. "#bishwhere #thedevilisaliar #shesnotthatintoyou #shesnotintoyouatall #shesneverevenmetyou #thisactuallyhurtmyfeelings #defamationofcharacter," the singer captioned a screenshot of Barnes' interview.
Justin Bieber has made a habit of sharing old photos of the good times with former girlfriend Selena Gomez, including one he posted two days after she was reportedly spotted making out with One Direction's Niall Horan at a Los Angeles party. The on-again, off-again couple split in 2014, after first stepping out together in 2010. "I'm proud of the woman she is today," Bieber told Billboard in November. "When you love someone that much, even if something comes between you, it's a love that never really dies."
13. MEETING THE NEW GIRL/GUY
What's the best way to get to know someone? Check out their social media presence, of course! And Miranda Lambert seems to want to get better acquainted with ex Blake Shelton's girlfriend, Gwen Stefani: She recently threw her a follow on Twitter.
14. GIVING THEIR SONG A SHOUT-OUT
15. CELEBRATING EACH OTHER'S HOTNESS
After the release of Zayn Malik's steamy new video for "Pillowtalk," which features his then-rumored supermodel love Gigi Hadid, the pair exchanged flirty emojis on Twitter. Just in case, you know, you hadn't noticed how attractive they both were in the clip. "@GigiHadid you seen the video babe?" the singer wrote to his flame. "Someones Looking" good, he continued. "@zaynmalin nah musta missed it," Hadid teased in reply. "Jokes…I wasn't looking at myself, trust me," she added, along with a flirty dose of heart-eyes and fire emojis.
16. BEGGING THEM TO COME BACK
Sage the Gemini has made it clear that he's so not over Jordin Sparks. The rapper posted a since-deleted pic of the good times with his former flame on Instagram following the demise of their 10-month relationship – with commentary. "You the only girl I can call at 3 in the morning and you'll answer no problem," he reportedly captioned the photo. "You the only girl that can wake up out of a dead sleep and get me some water because I was coughing in my sleep, the only girl that loves me the way you were supposed to. I miss you too much to watch you look so amazing at the Clive Davis [Grammy] party and not be able to call you and express how much I appreciated the look because you won't answer nor text back. The feeling is horrible," he continued. Though the emotional message disappeared from his Instagram account, Sage retweeted a fan who linked to an article about the social media love letter. Sparks has yet to comment on her lovesick ex.
17. STOPPING SPECULATIONS ABOUT THE BREAKUP
As fans went wild wondering what went wrong when Calvin Harris and Taylor Swift called it quits after 15 months together, the DJ took to Twitter to stop rumors of bad blood. "The only truth here is that a relationship came to an end amp what remains is a huge amount of love and respect," he wrote. Swift retweeted the message, proving the lingering feelings of admiration were mutual.
18. ANNOUNCING THE SPLIT TOGETHER
After six years of dating, Demi Lovato and Wilmer Valderrama came together one last time … to share their breakup news. "After almost 6 loving and wonderful years together, we have decided to end our relationship," the two wrote in a message posted to both of their Instagram accounts. "This was an incredibly difficult decision for both of us, but we have realized more than anything that we are better as best friends. We will always be supportive of one another. Thank you to everyone who has offered us kindness and support over the years. With only love, Wilmer amp Demi."
19. CLEANSING YOUR PROFILE
Taylor Swift and Calvin Harris's breakup seemed to be amicable at first – but after images of Swift canoodling with Avengers actor Tom Hiddleston surfaced online, things went south. Both expunged their various accounts of nearly any trace of each other (including their tropical vacation snaps), including Harris's post-breakup tweet that read: "The only truth here is that a relationship came to an end amp what remains is a huge amount of love and respect." Who needs a digital reminder of your past relationship when a new one is ahead?
