The former Disney star shows off her acting chops in her moving clip
The singer, 23, released a haunting music video for her new single on Wednesday, marking a sharp departure from her recent upbeat hits. Reflecting on losing a love to another woman, Lovato embraces her emotion while wandering in the snow and breaking down in tears in a bathtub.
“Stone Cold” is the third release from her latest album Confident. And although the emotional tune isn’t primed for the dance floor like the set’s second single of the same title, fans shouldn’t be surprised Lovato is highlighting her powerhouse pipes in a ballad this time around. After all, her stunning cover of Adele‘s “Hello” went viral in November.
As convincing as the emotion in “Stone Cold” might be, the lyrics aren’t about the state of her relationship with Wilmer Valderrama, 36 – in January, the former Disney star and actor celebrated their sixth anniversary. “I don’t see a ring … I wouldn’t mind if I saw one!” she said of engagement rumors during an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show last month. “There’s time for everything, you know. We’ve been together this long, and obviously I’m not going anywhere and vice versa.”
The release comes days after Lovato backtracked on her rumored criticism of Taylor Swift for donating $250,000 to their fellow pop star Kesha, who is embroiled in a legal battle with producer Dr. Luke. Lovato explained her perspective on Instagram, writing, “Everyone has their own way of giving support to others, and at the end of the day, helping victims is all that matters.”
