Demi Lovato is “Confident” in her sexuality, and she’s not afraid to say so.
The singer tells PEOPLE it’s “fair to say” she doesn’t care for labels. In fact, when it comes to sexuality, “It’s something I don’t think needs to have a label: As humans, It’s just about a connection with someone.”
This, of course, isn’t the first time Lovato, 23, has been vocal on the matter. After she released her single “Cool for the Summer” last year, its blush-worthy lyrics (e.g. “Got a taste for the cherry / I just need to take a bite” and “Don’t be scared ’cause I’m your body type”) sparked rumors that she was bi-curious.
While Lovato has long been an ardent advocate for the LGBT community, she recently made headlines when she and tour-mate Nick Jonas canceled their Future Now concerts in North Carolina because of the restrictive “bathroom bill” they found “hateful.”
“It’s something I’m passionate about because I get it; I grew up in Texas. Being different in Texas or in the South in general, you can be judged,” says the singer, who announced last week she and her boyfriend of nearly six years, Wilmer Valderrama, had broken up.
“I grew up in a home where there was absolutely nothing wrong with somebody identifying as another sex or liking the same sex. People will say, ‘Thank you so much for all that you do.’ And my response is: It’s just something that people should already be doing.”
Jonas, 23, couldn’t agree more with his longtime friend, with whom he’ll hit the road starting June 29 in Atlanta.

“I grew up in the theater community, and I was around the LGBT community early on in my life,” he says. “I came from a really loving home that was all about acceptance – acceptance of all people of all walks of life. So I think I’ve carried that with me as I’ve transitioned into my adult career. I try to do what I can to support a community that’s been very supportive of me.”
