On Thursday, Demi Lovato dropped a cute Instagram she snapped with Selena Gomez, marking the first time they’ve been seen together since early 2014. “Look at how #coolforthesummer we are,” Lovato captioned her picture. “Friends for years, #sameoldlove.” In the hours since, Lovato’s post has racked up nearly 1 million likes and thousands of comments from fans who are thrilled to see the longtime friends together again. “Delena is back bitchessss,” wrote Instagram user sedemiley_, calling out a nickname for the pair. Another fan tweeted the new selfie next to a throwback photo of the Gomez and Lovato, writing, “FOREVER FRIENDSHIP GOALS.” The enthusiastic response stems from Gomez and Lovato’s commonalities and deep history together. Not only are they both 23-year-old pop singers, but they also appeared on Barney and Friends as kids together and went on to become Disney childhood stars. (Lovato made it big with the channel’s original movie Camp Rock in 2008, and Gomez became a household name on the hit show Wizards of Waverly Place, which debuted in 2007.) Still, their friendship has weathered its share of ups and downs. The stars seemed inseparable in the early years – Gomez told PEOPLE they loved to do “everything” together during a joint interview in 2009, and the duo also took PEOPLE’s BFF test. The connection appeared to sour in the next few years but picked back up by January 2014, when they were spotted grabbing dinner together after Gomez opened up about their friendship to E! News. “I’ve known her since we were 7, and we did fall apart for a while. She was going through things and I was so young and it was confusing,” Gomez said, explaining her reaction to Lovato’s struggle with sobriety in previous years. “I processed it saying, ‘OK, I don’t understand what she’s going through so I’m just going to do this.’ I don’t think it was fair, and I’m so happy that I have her back in my life now.” The ladies seemed to be on the same page when they linked up at the unite4:good and Variety‘s unite4:humanity Gala, where they were both honored for their humanitarian efforts. Cut to Lovato’s appearance on Bravo’s Watch What Happens Live in August 2014, when host Andy Cohen asked Lovato why she unfollowed Gomez on Twitter that July. “I think it’s just one of those things where people change and people grow apart,” Lovato explained. One year later, Gomez reached out to Lovato via Twitter to wish her a happy birthday on Aug. 20, writing, “@ddlovato IM so grateful you were born. #nomatterwhat #forever #haveTHEbestbday.” With their recent posts, Gomez and Lovato have made it clear their friendship is back on track. Stay tuned for their next chapter.
