Debra Messing and husband Daniel Zelman want to keep their divorce civil for the sake of their 8-year-old son, the actress’s rep says in a statement to PEOPLE.

Messing, 44, cited the usual irreconcilable differences and is seeking joint custody, according to Tuesday’s divorce petition in Los Angeles Superior Court.

“Debra Messing and Daniel Zelman have agreed to amicably end their 10-year marriage,” her rep says in the statement. “In keeping with their mutual wishes, Ms. Messing filed the divorce papers earlier yesterday in Los Angeles. They remain best of friends and fully committed to raising their son together.”

The pair were married in 2000 and announced their split last December. Court papers said they actually separated in 2010.

Messing is currently dating her Smash costar Will Chase.
