In Trust the Man, David Duchovny, 46, plays a stay-at-home dad in a troubled marriage with Julianne Moore. In real life the actor, married to actress T a Leoni since 1997, is a little more adept at dealing with romance, kids and die-hard X-Files fans.

What’s the secret to a good marriage? Ask for what you want – even though you may risk being too needy or demanding. But to expect the other person to be a mind reader never works.

What’s the most romantic thing you’ve ever done? T a has a really nice singing voice and doesn’t think that she does. I rented out a studio with a band and said, “I’m taking off, you’ve got five hours.” (So) she made her demo.

How did it feel to kiss Moore in front of her husband, director Bart Freundlich? Sometimes it was odd, like in the scene where we’re making out in the back of a cab and Bart was behind the camera. He kinda sulked. No, he was great. But I don’t know what happened when they went home.

Are you a good stay-at-home dad when T a is working? I’m fun because the kids (daughter West, 7, and son Kyd, 4) know there are no rules because Daddy doesn’t know the rules. I forget everything.

Who’s the funniest person in your house? My son, I think. He’s 4, so, you know, he doesn’t do a lot of political humor. He works mostly blue, mostly potty stuff.

How was it filming Trust in your hometown of New York? It was weird, especially when I was shooting across the street from the actual apartment that I grew up in. I could see the window that used to be my room.

Do X-Files fans still stop you on the street? People don’t seem to know the show isn’t on the air because it runs on cable. So sometimes fans ask me about this week’s episode. (I just say,) “It’s scary. I can tell you that.”
