'I Thought I Was Past My Sell-By Date:' David Beckham Talks Being PEOPLE's Sexiest Man Alive, Says 'It Will Make My Mum Happy'

“I thought I was past my sell by date but thanks to @PeopleMag for the accolade and the compliment!” the father-of-four captioned an Instagram photo of cover of PEOPLE’s new issue.
“I always feel a little shy when receiving these Awards, though it will make my Mum happy. This one the kids will laugh at, as they see what Daddy looks like in the morning!”
The 40-year-old told PEOPLE that it’s a “huge honor” to wear the Sexiest Man crown, although he isn’t sure he is deserving of the title.
“I never feel that I’m an attractive, sexy person,” he said in this week’s cover story. “I mean I like to wear nice clothes and nice suits and look and feel good, but I don’t ever think of myself that way.”

The former soccer star is a devoted father of Brooklyn, 16, Romeo, 12, Cruz 10 and 4-year-old Harper. And although Beckham’s fashion mogul wife Victoria, 41, was on-board with his new title, the Beckham kids had a bit of a hard time wrapping their heads around the news.
“We kind of laughed about it with the boys and the boys kind of laughed at me and said, ‘Really?! Sexiest man alive? Really?’ ” Beckham said. “Brooklyn was the one who was like, ‘Are you sure it’s not me that’s meant to be there today?'”
Maybe in a few decades, Brooklyn.
