A Texas dad died on Tuesday after shooting off a firework from his chest.
Justin Bartek, 30, was setting off fireworks with his friends at a popular fishing spot along the Colorado River in Columbus, Texas, when he put one of the fireworks on his chest and lit it, KTRK reports.
He was transported to Columbus Community Hospital in critical condition, where he later died.
His death came as a shock to those who were close to him. “He was here yesterday smiling and talking to everyone and saying, ‘Hi,’ ” friend Erica Jackson told KPRC. “And today you get the sad news that he’s just not here.”
Bartek, a postal worker, was father to a 3-year-old son. “You don’t see that smiling face coming at you and just waving and just giving you a nice little pep in your day,” said Jackson. “I was driving by to go to the post office and I saw a postal truck, and just out of habit is to go wave and it wasn’t him.”
A 22-year-old man died over the weekend after he placed a firework on top of his head and set it off. “Devon was not the kind of person who would do something stupid,” his brother Cody Staples said. “He was the kind of person who would pretend to do something stupid to make people laugh.”
