Danny DeVito Receives Support from 'It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia' Cast After Split

"He's bummed and we're bummed for him," says DeVito's costar Rob McElhenney

Recent news of Danny DeVito’s split from Rhea Perlman proves it’s not Always Sunny in Philadelphia, even though the cast’s disposition certainly is.

The cast and crew of FX’s It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia celebrated the season 8 premiere at the ArcLight Cinerama Dome in Hollywood on Tuesday.

But DeVito, who plays Frank Reynolds on the series, was visibly absent from the red carpet and screening following Monday’s announcement that after 30 years of marriage, the actor, 67, and Perlman, 64, are separating.

“I spoke with him yesterday and obviously he’s bummed and we’re bummed for him,” Rob McElhenney told PEOPLE. “We love them both and this is a really difficult time for both of them, so we’re supporting both of them.”

Perlman, who visited the set “here and there,” is “part of the family,” Glenn Howerton said.

Despite the news of the split, the cast remained supportive of their costar.

“All we can say is, we love them both and we wish them the best,” Charlie Day said.

Mary Elizabeth Ellis – who plays “The Waitress” on the show and is married to Charlie Day – echoed her husband’s sentiment.

“It’s always sad when something like this happens with your friends, but we love them both very much.”
