COVER SNEAK PEEK: Jodie Sweetin From Meth Addict to Mom
Conquering her habit, the former child star tells PEOPLE being a new mom is "amazing"
Still best known for playing spunky middle child Stephanie on Full House from age 5 to 13, Jodie Sweetin, now 26 and a first-time mom (for the past seven weeks), is living a life that’s a far cry from what she’s been through over the past few years: An addiction to crystal meth that so took over her life that it wrecked her first marriage, PEOPLE reports in its latest cover story, on newsstands Friday.
Recounting her descent until she entered rehab in 2005, Sweetin was a 22-year-old college student married to LAPD officer Shaun Holguin and taking a break from acting when she first tried the drug. Six months later, she had developed a crippling daily habit.
“You don’t even realize that it’s taken over so quickly,” she says of those days, when she avoided her parents and kept the secret from her husband.
“He had no idea,” she recalls. That is, until in 2005, when Sweetin was hospitalized after a night of partying. It was then she admitted her addiction to her family.
For Sweetin’s complete story – including how the love of her new husband, Cody Herpin, and the support of her former TV cast helped with her recovery – pick up this week’s PEOPLE, on newsstands Friday
