Ethan Scott’s fiancé gave him an incredible birthday gift: a new color!

The 24-year-old California vlogger was born red/green colorblind. “It doesn’t mean I see the world in black and white, it just means that I see things in a way that are a little bit more dull than usual. I can see some pink and some green; it’s just sometimes green looks brown or yellow and pink looks silver or blue,” Scott explains in the video.

Using linear programming and perceptual psychophysics, the EnChroma team created a filter that virtually cures the wearer’s colorblindness. When Scott is handed a pair of the optical-aid glasses, he has no idea what they are capable of.

At first, all he can do is laugh in disbelief. Slowly, Scott begins to gleefully take in everything around him, from a vibrant green plant to colored markers. But it’s a purple cleaning product that really blows his mind.

“Is this purple?” Scott exclaims while examining the container of wipes with more interest than any human before him. “That Lysol thing is scaring me!”

Running outside, Scott experiences the lushness of grass and the beauty of lavender flowers for the first time.

“It’s so beautiful,” he says with a laugh, rubbing his hands through the grass. “It’s kinda scary. My heart is racing.”

“I was honestly just shaking and couldn’t comprehend what I was seeing,” he says of the experience.

Scott’s fiancé, James, is probably already racking his brain for next year’s birthday present. Purple is a gift that won’t be topped anytime soon.
