"They love each other dearly and have split up in hopes that growing on their own paths will bring them together in the future," Hadid's rep tells PEOPLE
And they’re off again.
Gigi Hadid and Cody Simpson have broken up, PEOPLE confirms.
“Cody and Gigi want each other to be in a place right now that allows him to only focus on his music, fans, and new message, while she can focus and continue building her career,” Hadid’s rep tells PEOPLE in a statement. “They love each other dearly and have split up in hopes that growing on their own paths will bring them together in the future.”
The pair will remain amiable exes. “They remain friends with no hard feelings and each other’s biggest supporters.”
Both are, of course, juggling busy careers: The Aussie singer-songwriter, 18, is gearing up to release his first independent album, Free. Meanwhile, model Hadid, 20, is balancing high-fashion ad campaigns and will appear in pal Taylor Swift‘s upcoming “Bad Blood” music video.
The couple stepped out together last month, hanging with friends Justin Bieber and Kendall Jenner at Coachella. And at a Victoria’s Secret event in Miami in March, Simpson told PEOPLE he and Hadid were “in a good place” but added that distance can put a strain on any relationship.
“It’s give and take – you’ve got to have a certain trust,” he said. “You build something, and for us, it’s been sustainable. [We’re] very supportive of each other, she’s stoked for me, and it’s mutual.”
The on-off pair broke up the first time last spring but remained friends then, as well.
“I definitely don’t imagine it being over for good,” Simpson presciently told PEOPLE at the time.
