New York Homestretch: Hillary Dances the Merengue; Danny DeVito Rallies for Bernie

Hillary Clinton is leading Bernie Sanders by about 13 points in New York primary polls

The New York primary is just one day away and Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton appears to be feeling good about her chances.

During a whirlwind tour of New York City’s five boroughs over the weekend, the former secretary of state danced the merengue in Washington Heights after declaring to supporters there: “The future starts here in Harlem!”

Clinton smiled widely as she danced on stage with State Sen. Adriano Espaillat and State Assemblyman Keith Wright, even getting a twirl from Sen. Espaillat.

According to RealClearPolitics’ average, Clinton is leading rival Bernie Sanders by nearly 13 points in Tuesday’s critical contest in New York.

But on Monday the Vermont senator and Brooklyn native urged voters to take the polls with a grain of salt.

“Those are the public polls. The bottom line is, let’s look at the real poll tomorrow,” Sanders said on NBC’s Today show. “Generally speaking, polling has underestimated how we do in elections.”

The Democratic socialist’s campaign got some help over the weekend from actor Danny DeVito, who stumped for Sanders at a rally in Brooklyn’s Prospect Park on Sunday.

“I just hugged the man who shook the hand of the Pope,” DeVito said as he introduced the senator, who met the pope over the weekend after speaking at a conference in Vatican City. “We are going to go out and vote and put this man on Pennsylvania Avenue ladies and gentlemen, we are here for a hometown boy.”

He then led the audience of more than 28,000 people in a “Bernie” chant before welcoming Sanders to the stage.

“He’s coming, baby. Here he comes … ladies and gentlemen, the next president of the United States – our Obi Wan.”

If the force is not with Sanders on Tuesday, however, it could be the beginning of the end for his presidential campaign.

As The Washington Post writes, “If Hillary wins by double digits, which all the polls suggest she will, Sanders’ path to the Democratic nomination becomes extraordinarily narrow.”
