Cindy Crawford: 'I Learned How to Be Famous' from Ex-Husband Richard Gere
The supermodel opens up about lessons learned from her first marriage to actor Richard Gere
Cindy Crawford hasn’t been one to talk about her ex-husband, actor Richard Gere, but the happily re-married mom of two is now opening up (a little) about their relationship, and explains why she hasn’t said more.
“It’s not something I want to share,” Crawford, 49, says in the latest issue of Porter on her decision not to include Gere in her autobiography Becoming. “If I felt that there was a great good that could come of it, I might have shared more, but I didn’t think that there was anything for other people to learn or benefit from. And I wanted to be respectful.”
The supermodel divulged to the magazine an important lesson learned from her first husband, however.
“Look, I learned a lot from Richard,” she says. “I learned about how to be famous. Again, that’s not a universal lesson. And a lot of the personal things, everything else I learned from that, were for me.”
The pair were together for four years before calling it quits in 1995. While there was a notable age difference, the couple, who wed in a quickie Las Vegas ceremony in 1991, had different priorities. While Crawford had her focus set on advancing her career, Gere, a Buddhist, was more devoted to spiritual practice. Crawford also said the marriage did not get enough attention.
“We didn’t spend enough time together,” Crawford said in 1995. “And we’re equally responsible for that. We thought it would be okay if we just flew in from Paris to L.A. to get together for a night to see each other. It wasn’t.”
