When you’re on tour, sometimes you just need a little comfort food.
“Something that I love to eat that’s kind of weird … I like to make my grilled cheese with mayonnaise spread on the outside instead of butter,” the singer – whose new album It’s Not Over The Hits So Far is available now – tells PEOPLE.
The star first discovered the sandwich hack when he was up late working late on an album. “A guy that used to work with us who was also from North Carolina came up to make us grilled cheeses and that’s how he made them,” he says. “It’s like we had just seen Jesus!”
As for what exactly the mayo does for the sandwich? “It just tastes better,” he says. “That’s all I can say. It’s my jam.”
Daughtry, 36, will also be starring as Judas in Fox’s upcoming Biblical live musical The Passion. “It’s the only one that would’ve made sense for me,” he says of taking on the role. “Everyone’s made that mistake where you felt just overwhelming amounts of guilt, and almost immediately after you do it, you’re like ‘Why the hell did I do that?’ There’s a very human side to this guy.”
