Morrissey, being a strident vegetarian, probably wouldn’t be thrilled with the choice of venue, but as far as dramatic post-breakup gestures go, we think he’d approve.

Tan Shen, 26, from Chengdu in China’s southwest Sichuan Province, was recently dumped. And as one does, she decided she needed some comfort food. But not just any comfort food: Only the blend of 11 secret herbs and spices that makes Colonel Sanders’s fried chicken the choice of discerning gourmands worldwide would soothe her pain. (Unless there’s a Popeye’s available?)

Tan stopped off at a KFC, located near at a train station right by her house, but decided to really double down***: She phoned in sick from work and stayed a whole week at the KFC.

“I hadn’t planned on staying there long, I just wanted some chicken wings,” Tan said, according to Yahoo. “But once I got in there and started eating I decided I needed time to think. I didn’t want to go back to my apartment because it was full of memories of him. So I stayed.”

Jiang Li Lung, 22, who works at the KFC, said the restaurant is open 24 hours a day, so at first Tan went relatively unnoticed.

“But after a few days, I began thinking she looked really familiar. Then I realized we had been serving her for the past three days and that she hadn’t actually left.”

“When we asked her if she was okay, she said she was and just needed time to think. And then asked for another box of chicken wings with extra large fries.”

After a week – during which she attracted the attention of local media – Tan decided she was “getting sick of the taste of chicken,” so she vacated the KFC, quit her job and took the next train home to her parents.

Tan may be gone from the KFC, but she’s not forgotten. “I guess we kind of miss her,” waitress Jiang said. “It certainly made work more interesting.”

*** The Double Down was a legendary KFC "sandwich." That’s a little thing called wordplay.
