Chelsea Clinton might have political pedigree in the form of dad, former President Bill Clinton, and mom, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, but so far she’s declined to step into the public-service arena herself – until now.

Speaking to Vogue in its September issue about possibly diving into politics, she reversed her usual stance, answering, “I don’t know,” when asked if she’d consider a political career.

“Before my mom’s campaign I would have said no,” Clinton, 32, said about her mom’s unsuccessful 2008 presidential bid. “Not because it was something I had thought a lot about, but because people have been asking me that my whole life.”

“And now I don’t know,” she continued. “I mean, I have voted in every election that I have been qualified to vote in since I turned 18.”

Clinton, who currently serves as an NBC News special correspondent (and will moderate political panels at the Democratic and Republican conventions this September), also talked about growing up in the spotlight.

“Historically I deliberately tried to lead a private life in the public eye,” she said. “And now I am trying to lead a purposefully public life.”

Although Clinton may follow in her mother’s political footsteps, she and husband Marc Mezvinsky may wait a few years to make her mother happy in another way – by having children. That, she says, might have to wait “a couple of years … God willing.”
