Charity Axes Diana's Butler

Princess Diana’s former butler Paul Burrell was relieved of his job at the fund set up after her death to handle the millions of dollars donated in her memory. The Diana Memorial Fund said on Sunday that Burrell, whom the princess called “her rock,” had been told that his services as coordinator of fund-raising attempts would no longer be required. Burrell will leave in January after working one month’s notice.

  • Burrell was reported to be saddened at the decision by the memorial fund. Media reports said he had fallen victim to a dispute among the trustees on whether to direct its efforts toward raising more money or merely distributing what it has already collected (some $143 million) from the public.
