The 63-year-old singer entered rehab
Singer Chaka Khan has entered a drug rehabilitation program to battle her addiction to prescription drugs.
In a statement to PEOPLE, representatives for Khan wrote that the singer, 63, had entered rehab for an addiction to prescription pain medication:
“Representatives for Chaka Khan announced today that ten-time Grammy Award-winning recording artist Chaka Khan has entered an addiction rehabilitation and aftercare program which will cause her to postpone all dates scheduled for the month of July,” the statement reads. “Chaka has struggled with a dependence on prescription pain medications and has voluntarily entered the program to get healthy and stay that way. As part of the ongoing outpatient treatment the doctors have urged her to resume recording mid-July and commence all performances beginning August 1st and onward.”
After initial reports of Khan’s rehab news hit, a different rep for Kahn provided PEOPLE with the following statement:
“The rumors regarding Chaka Khan’s well being are malicious and without merit,” Khan’s rep said in a statement to PEOPLE. “Like so many others, Chaka Khan has spent the past week mourning the lives lost and reflecting on the social unrest plaguing our country. She strongly encourages those who have focused their energies elsewhere to do the same.”
