Chris Cornell dies of suicide at 52

Chris Cornell, the lead singer of Soundgarden and Audioslave, was found dead of suicide by hanging at MGM Grand Detroit following the band’s performance just hours earlier on Wednesday. He was 52.

Despite the medical examiner’s ruling, Cornell’s wife Vicky claimed on Thursday that her late husband was not suicidal.

In a statement, the Cornell family’s attorney Kirk Pasich said that Cornell told his wife that he had taken “an extra Ativan or two” before his death.

“Without the results of toxicology tests, we do not know what was going on with Chris — or if any substances contributed to his demise,” Pasich said. “Chris, a recovering addict, had a prescription for Ativan and may have taken more Ativan than recommended dosages. The family believes that if Chris took his life, he did not know what he was doing, and that drugs or other substances may have affected his actions.”

Ativan — which is used to treat anxiety, substance abuse and other issues — has rare but serious side effects that include worsening depression and thoughts of self-harm, according to the U.S. National Library of Medicine.

A friend of the family who had recently seen Cornell told PEOPLE, “Chris seemed in really great spirits and everyone is in complete shock.”

An attendee of Cornell’s last concert on Thursday told PEOPLE, however, that some of the singer’s behavior was different than in the past performances.

Photographer Ken Settle said the band closed out the final show with a Led Zeppelin song, “In My Time of Dying.”

He told PEOPLE, “It’s a very odd choice to weave that in and now it does make you wonder. There is so much that does point to a person who perhaps knew what was coming up, which is so sad.”

Fans around the world – and in his hometown of Seattle – are now paying tribute to Cornell. On Thursday night, the city’s iconic Space Needle went dark for an hour in honor of Cornell.

Cornell leaves behind wife Vicky and their two children, daughter Toni, 12, and son Christopher, 11, as well as daughter Lillian, 16, from his previous marriage to Susan Silver.

Another Bachelor couple bites the dust: Ben Higgins and Lauren Bushnell announced their split earlier this week.

In an exclusive joint statement to PEOPLE, the former couple said, “It is with heavy hearts that we announce our decision to go our separate ways. We feel fortunate for the time we had together, and will remain friends with much love and respect for one another. We wish nothing but the best for each other, and ask for your support and understanding at this time.”

The pair got engaged in the finale of Higgins’ season of The Bachelor, which aired in March of last year. After moving in together in Higgins’ hometown of Denver, they returned to the small screen for a Freeform reality show about their lives together, Ben and Lauren: Happily Ever After?

In the wake of the breakup news, Higgins said in a new iHeartRadio podcast, “It’s tough. It’s hard to say goodbye to somebody that you spent so much time with and it’s hard to say goodbye to somebody that you really did believe was the one for you.”

Country rocker Brantley Gilbert and his wife Amber are expecting their first child after years of trying to conceive.

Gilbert is already envisioning life as a dad. He told PEOPLE, “In the middle of a day, I’ll find myself smiling about nothing.”

Dancing with the Stars viewers – and even the judges – are reeling after one of the Final Five was kicked off the current season of the reality competition series in an elimination shocker.

Olympic gold medalist Simone Biles and partner Sasha Farber didn’t receive enough votes to make it past the final four, even with perfect performance scores.

Despite the shocking loss, Biles, 20, smiled and told viewers, “I’m just thankful to be at this competition. I feel like I’ve learned a lot about myself. I’ve matured. And I can’t wait to go home and I’ll be back next week at the finale.”
