From Sizzle to Fizzle: Stars' Summer Breakups
JENNIFER & NICK
Though they tried, Lawrence and Hoult couldn't make it work, ending their three-year romance in August. The stars met on the set of X-Men: First Class in 2011, parted ways briefly in 2013, then maintained a long-distance relationship (Hoult lives in his native England) after rekindling their romance while filming X-Men: Days of Future Past. Since their split, the Oscar winner has been linked to Coldplay frontman (and Gwyneth Paltrow ex) Chris Martin.

J. Lo's relationship with backup dancer Smart had after two-and-a-half years. "They initially split about six weeks ago, but that can take a little time to extricate. But they've definitely broken up," a source told PEOPLE in June. Could their fizzle be starting to re-sizzle, though? The two were spotted sharing a sweet treat during the MTV VMAs on Aug. 24.
BRITNEY & DAVID
Guess he was a "Womanizer." Spears did not keep quiet about Lucado's infidelity when addressing fans at her Las Vegas show on Aug. 31 after sharing news of her split from her boyfriend of 17 months. And she's not looking back in anger, either. "The best thing about being cheated on," she told the crowd, "is I get to go on more first dates."
JEWEL & TY
The folk singer and her husband of six years, pro bull rider Murray, announced the end of their marriage on July 2. "My husband, friend and partner of 16 years and I have decided to get a divorce," she wrote on her blog. "We wanted our separation as husband and wife to be nothing less loving than the way we came together." The two have one son together, 3-year-old Kase.
MELANIE & ANTONIO
Griffith shocked the world by filing for divorce from Banderas on June 6. "We have thoughtfully and consensually decided to finalize our almost twenty years marriage in a loving and friendly manner honoring and respecting each other, our family and friends and the beautiful time we have spent together," the couple, parents to 18-year-old Stella, said in a statement. The A-listers, who met on the set of 1995's Too Much, had appeared happy in recent years – Griffith even wore her wedding ring to an event two days before the news broke.
ZAC & MICHELLE
This summer's hottest new hookup faded along with the sunshine, as Efron and Rodriguez ended their two-month romance in late August. "It was very mutual," a source shared. The unlikely loves were first spotted canoodling over the Fourth of July weekend while on vacation in Sardinia, Italy, then made headlines once again in early August when they were photographed together in Ibiza, Spain.
DAVID & TéA
Duchovny and Leoni had weathered a few storms in the past – they separated in 2008, reconciled, then separated again in 2011 – but decided to permanently end their 17-year union this summer. The actors filed for divorce in June, citing "an irretrievable breakdown" of the marriage. The former couple will share joint legal custody of their two children, Kyd, 12, and Madelaine, 15.
ARIANA & JAI
The pint-sized diva didn't let a little romance "problem" get her down this summer. Grande reportedly ended her two-year on-again, off-again relationship with Australian boy band member Brooks in July. But by August she was on the rebound, seen holding hands with rapper Big Sean (Naya Rivera's ex) backstage at the MTV VMAs.
MICHAEL & NICOLE
Murphy ended her five-year engagement to talk show host and former NFL player Strahan in mid-summer, announcing the news just one day before he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. "They love each other very much, but with the distance and work schedule it has been hard to maintain the relationship," Strahan's rep told PEOPLE.
SARAH & MATT
RAMONA & MARIO
The Real Housewives of New York City star faced some real-life family drama this summer, splitting from her husband of 22 years – for the second time. Singer first filed for divorce in January when rumors of her husband's infidelity swirled, but the pair reconciled in April. On Aug. 7, though, Singer announced that she and Mario were done for good. "I tried my best to make my marriage work," she Tweeted. "I am excited for the new chapter in my life." In late August, the reality star moved the couple's 19-year-old daughter into her college dorm – solo.
