From Irish stars to American LGBT activists, everyone was getting in on the vote

Ireland became the first country to approve same-sex marriage by a popular vote on Saturday and celebrities were quick to voice their reactions to the historic decision on social media.

Over 60 percent of the 3.2 million people eligible to vote cast ballots, and results showed it was nearly two to one in favor of legalizing same-sex marriage, the New York Times reported. Ireland joins more than 18 other countries that have already legalized gay marriage, but is the first to do so by nationwide referendum.

Many famous faces lauded the decision on Twitter, sharing congratulations to the Emerald Isle’s citizens .

Irish celebs, including musician Hozier, voiced their support of the vote.

Natives of neighboring England also joined the conversation on Twitter.

Other outspoken advocates of LGBT rights also shared well wishes for the country.
