Me-WOW! The Cats That Made Our Year
She's a mermaid – or should we say meow-maid? With an effort we think would impress Michael Phelps, this 13-year-old chubby kitty made a splash in January when she swam laps at the Olde Towne Pet Resort in Dulles, Va., in hopes of shedding some weight.
CATS IN CANNES
It took six felines to play the role of the cat who follow actor Oscar Isaac around in the film Inside Llewyn Davis – and those sassy ginger kitties continued to steal the show at the Cannes Film Festival in the spring. "They had a large rider of requests," joked Justin Timberlake, who also stars in the film, "a specific type of cat food."
It was a Red-letter year for Taylor Swift's beloved furry friend, who continued to dominate all aspects of the singer's life (and ours!) in 2013. Swift had plenty to celebrate in February when she scooped up a Grammy for the song "Safe & Sound," but instead of hitting the after-party scene, she opted for quiet time with Meredith. Wouldn't you?
Now here's a tail of survival: A Bulgarian cat who lost use of her hind legs after being shot with an air rifle got a new lease on life this year thanks to a purr-ty pink wheelchair specially crafted for her in Germany.
BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY'S CAT
There were plenty of boos (and hisses) in the feline community when the understudy playing Holly Golightly's furry friend in the New York stage adaptation of Breakfast at Tiffany's was shown the door this spring after failing to obey instructions. A cat who doesn't listen? Imagine that!
If there were a beauty pageant for felines, this kitten would have it in the bag! The squeezable tabby took the Internet by storm when she appeared in a series of beautiful portraits snapped by her Tokyo-based owner, photographer Ben Torode.
Cat lovers everywhere rejoiced when the classic board game Monopoly replaced its iron token with a a shiny feline. The shorthaired kitty was chosen by fans, beating out a new guitar, helicopter, diamond ring and toy robot with 31 percent of an online vote.
Watch out Puppy Bowl, there's a new, equally furry alternative to the Super Bowl – but this one requires catnip! Hallmark Channel announced this year that the Kitten Bowl, a squee-worthy spectacle of feline friskiness, will air for three lovely hours on Feb. 2, 2014.
THE SUBWAY KITTENS
Some lookers stop traffic. These kittens, on the other hand, halted New York City's subway system right in its tracks in August after a woman reported that her kittens were loose around the rails. Power was cut to the B and Q lines in Brooklyn for more than one hour until the four-legged commuters, named Arthur and August, were rescued nearly seven hours later. Now, they've found a forever home with a Brooklyn couple, who say the kitties are finding their new digs much easier to navigate than the N.Y.C. underground.
Fur was certainly flying for the Internet sensation when he broke the record for the cat with the longest fur in August. And that's a whole lot o' vacuuming for the Guinness World Record title holder's owners, Anne Marie Avey and Eric Rosario, who say it's "really fun to watch when he sits in front of a fan." The Himalayan-Persian mix's fur measures in at 9 inches, so "literally everything has hair on it in the house," his L.A.-based people add.
