Hours after Madonna and Guy Ritchie announced they were divorcing, the singer’s ex-boyfriend Carlos Leon admits he didn’t know anything about the split.

“That news was news to me,” Leon said during a radio interview on The Billy Bush Show. “That’s their personal life … It’s none of my business.”

On Wednesday, Madonna and Ritchie confirmed that they are ending their almost-eight-year marriage in a joint statement. “The main concern for Madonna and Guy are their children – the security of their children in all senses of the word and the wellbeing of their children,” Madonna’s rep Liz Rosenberg tells PEOPLE.

Leon – who has a daughter Lourdes, 12, with Madonna – echoes that sentiment. “I support Madonna and Guy and of course my daughter,” said Leon. “I support all the children and I show them love and it’s all I can do.”

Since their split in 1997, Leon, 42, and Madonna, 50, have maintained an amicable relationship for the sake of Lourdes, a.k.a. “Lola.” “I have a great relationship with all my ex-girlfriends, but especially Madonna,” Leon told Bush. “There was a friendship and there still is a friendship. If she needs to talk to me I’m there and if I need to talk to her she’s there. That’s the way it goes.”

“Parents can learn from us in that way,” said Leon, an actor and personal trainer who recently designed the fitness center at the Crescent Club in Long Island City. “Any parents that stay friends, it’s really good for the children.”
