James Wall, best known as Mr. Baxter on the iconic children’s series Captain Kangaroo, died Wednesday following a short illness at the age of 92.

The revolutionary vaudevillian, who delighted audiences as Captain Kangaroo’s friendly neighbor, appeared as the show’s first African-American character from 1968-1978, a part he lobbied for after joining the production team in 1962.

In subsequent years Wall began a lengthy career as a stage manager for various CBS and CBS Sports broadcasts. Wall is survived by his wife of 58 years, Dolly.
