The competition is heating up on FOX’s “American Idol.” On Wednesday night, the pop talent search (taped before the U.S.-led attack on Iraq began) found 24-year-old hopeful Charles Grigsby going home.

Grigsby — who chose a rendition of the song “You Can’t Win” from the Sidney Lumet film “The Wiz” for the show’s movie theme night — didn’t win, FOX News reports.

The departure of the contestant from Oberlin, Ohio, narrows the field to 10 finalists. Grigsby’s exit follows that of 21-year-old Vanessa Olivarez from Atlanta.

The Wednesday night results show, beefed up to one hour as opposed to last season’s half-hour offerings, didn’t actually start to winnow down the contestants until halfway into the program. The first 30 minutes concentrated on filler material such as sing-alongs, “Idol” updates and taped segments.
