Burt Reynolds says his famous facial hair improved his life in more ways than one.

“After I grew it, I got better parts and better ladies,” he tells PEOPLE in this week’s issue.

At 79, the star and author of the new memoir But Enough About Me says he has no plans to ever shave his iconic ‘stache.

(Although he famously did so on-camera in his 1974 film The Longest Yard.)

“I really am so used to it that I don’t think I’d [ever shave it],” he says. “I think I’d really miss it. I know that sounds silly but I would.”
