Bryant Zaps Katie

Bryant Gumbel’s candid opinions about co-workers have gotten him into trouble before, so it should come as no surprise that the former “Today” anchor (soon to head up a newly revamped CBS morning show) is again raising eyebrows with his off-camera commentary. In an interview Gumbel gave to this coming weekend’s New York Times Sunday Magazine, he refers to “somebody who should remain nameless” — but who is clearly his ex-“Today” cohost Katie Couric — as someone who “went through five (assistants) in five years, three or four make-up and hair people and had a primetime news show that failed to make the grade.” The Times story also quotes a source as saying that Katie’s fame irked Bryant.
