"The cancer only opened our eyes to how short life can be and how we shouldn t waste any moments," Brittney wrote
Jared Brewer always knew the love of his life was a fighter.
Since getting diagnosed with small cell cervical cancer in May 2014, Brittney Brewer has been fighting for her life, but that didn’t stop her and Jared from getting married.
The couple wasn’t sure Brittney was going to make it to their original Feb. 27 wedding date so they officially tied the knot on Feb. 14 in the chapel of Maine Medical Center, where she was getting treated. However, the pair still kept their original date and invited 180 guests to celebrate.
“She still wanted to have a big party to celebrate life and see everybody for probably the last time, unfortunately,” Jared Brewer tells PEOPLE.
Just two days after the couple’s big bash, Brittney passed away on Sunday after 10 months of battling cancer.
Jared’s sister, Janessa Brewer, took to Facebook to share the news.
“While Brittney may not have won her battle with cancer she will live on forever within our hearts!” Janessa wrote. “Jared was able to give her the wedding of her dreams and she enjoyed every minute of it! Brittney was a living, breathing angel … who now has her wings! We love you sweet girl! Rest in peace dear sister, you have taught me so much about life, I cannot express the gratitude I have towards you, you will never be forgotten!”
Brittney and Jared met while they were both working for the Corrections Department in Portland, Maine, and they started dating in April 2012.
“The cancer only opened our eyes to how short life can be and how we shouldn t waste any moments,” Brittney wrote on her blog. “So we decided not to.”
