Over the last eight months, Britney Spears and Charlie Ebersol appeared to be have a picture-perfect relationship, often sharing sweet snaps of their courtship on social media.

News broke Monday that the couple had called it quits, and now sources close to the singer and the TV producer tell PEOPLE that, by the end, the split did not come as a surprise to anyone – including Spears and Ebersol.

“It was obvious to everyone that it was going to happen,” says an Ebersol family source. “They’re still friends.”

Earlier in the relationship, “everyone thought he might end up asking her to marry him,” says the source. “It just faded away, and they moved apart.”

Echoed another source close to the couple: “Relationships are hard. Sometimes they don’t work out. These are two very busy people leading two very busy lives. They’re focusing on other priorities right now.”

Spears, 33, and Ebersol, 32, who is said to be “torn up” over the split, began dating in October and most recently appeared together publicly at the Billboard Music Awards last month.
