Couple Injured in Boston Marathon Bombing Weds

It may have been pouring rain in Asheville, N.C., on Friday, but underneath a tent filled with flowers it felt like the sun was shining.

That’s because Rebekah Gregory and Pete DiMartino, who were gravely injured in last April’s Boston Marathon bombing, were standing together, exchanging vows in front of family and friends who at one time had worried this day might never come.

The couple was positioned at the finish line of the Marathon on April 15, 2013, watching DiMartino’s mom run. When the first bomb exploded, they were both sent flying, Gregory ultimately losing functionality in her left leg, DiMartino suffering injuries to his Achilles tendon and requiring reconstructive surgery on his eardrums.

But after months of physical – and emotional – healing, the two became engaged in October 2013, and wed on Friday in a dream wedding planned by TheKnot.com and celebrity planner Marcy Blum in the gardens of Asheville’s breathtaking Biltmore Estate.

As 150 friends and family members looked on, tears in their eyes, Gregory, in a stunning fit-and-flare Sophia Moncelli for Kleinfeld gown, walked down a dreamy petal-covered aisle, escorted by her father Tim and son Noah, 6. She later held on tight to her husband, noting with a smile that she couldn’t stand without leaning on him for support. “Keep holding him like that – it’ll do well in your life,” the officiant said poignantly.

Following the 30-minute ceremony, guests headed to cocktail hour, taking in views of the Biltmore’s endless acres of flowers and the Great Smoky Mountains while nibbling on chicken and waffles and bruschetta. A tented reception featured a meal of filet, crab, whipped potatoes and roasted vegetables, plus a cake driven down from New York City’s Cake Alchemy. Every big element of the wedding – from the décor to Gregory’s hair and makeup – was voted on by TheKnot.com readers, giving the couple an “Enchanted Garden”-themed reception that featured whimsical rose-covered centerpieces and what Blum describes as a “kick-ass cover band.”

The DiMartinos plan to head to the Dominican Republic for a few days next week, followed by a bigger honeymoon to Thailand (furnished by TheKnot.com) in June. Though they still face hurdles, too – Gregory will have her left leg amputated later this year – what they’re most excited for are the memories they’re going to create together.

“Come next year, when we’re in the month of April, we’re not going to say, ‘This is the month we got blown up,'” the bride tells PEOPLE. “We’ll say, ‘This is the month we got married.'”
