Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds were friends – and then they became a lot more than friends.

When PEOPLE and Entertainment Weekly editorial director Jess Cagle asked Reynolds about just how their love story began after they costarred in Green Lantern, he recalled one fateful double date:

“It was funny because for about a year after Green Lantern had come and gone, all that stuff, we were both single,” Reynolds recalled to Cagle. “We went on a double date. She was on a date with another guy and I was on a date with another girl. That was the most awkward date for that respective party because we were just like fireworks.”

In the latest episode of The Jess Cagle Interview, Lively shares her memory of that night.

“Went well for him, there were no fireworks for me. No,” The Shallows actress jokes. “We were such good friends for so long and we both got to know each other as friends. It didn’t click for a good year and a half.”

Lively went on to say that she’s the one who had the bright idea they should pursue each other.

“I’m like, “Oh hey, wait. Hold on. We could date,'” she recalls. “That’s what I appreciate about our relationship is that he’s my friend first and foremost.”

The happy couple, who married in September 2012, are parents to daughter James, 2, and a newborn daughter, whose name hasn’t been released since she was born in September.
