Zane or Zayn, what’s in a name?

Actor Billy Zane is poking fun at the social media uproar over Zayn Malik’s departure from One Direction.

Assuming that the multitude of heartbroken Directioners’ Tweets are for him in a Funny or Die video, Zane says, “This whole hashtag ‘always in our hearts Zayn’ thing is curious in a couple ways.”

“I don’t want to be nitpicky, but just for the sake of record, it’s Z-A-N-E, not Z-A-Y-N,” he jokes.

Zane, 49, isn’t the only celebrity reacting to the news with humor. Jimmy Fallon and Chris O’Dowd both joked on Twitter Wednesday that they would like to replace Malik in the band.

And Boston mayor Marty Walsh quipped that he was “devastated.” “But we must soldier on,” he Tweeted.

But fans going through the five stages of grief have made it clear that they’re not exactly ready to laugh.
