Best & Worst of Summer
Did you hear? Tom Cruise is in love – with Katie Holmes! Add a few more exclamation points and you'll get Cruise's excitement – that is, if his couch jumping or rampant PDA didn't make it clear. Since getting engaged June 16, TomKat have been inseparable, with Holmes joining the actor on the set of Mission: Impossible 3 in Italy and L.A. Still no wedding date, but at least Cruise is "really, really enjoying this moment."
"She's moving on with her life," says a source close to Jennifer Aniston. Looking better than ever while filming The Break Up in Chicago and becoming tight with costar Vince Vaughn (left, on set), Aniston took control this summer. She even called out ex Brad Pitt (who's now with Angelina Jolie), telling Vanity Fair that he lacks a "sensitivity chip." Her coping strategy? "S--- happens," Aniston, whose divorce will be final on Oct. 2, told the magazine. "You joke and say, 'What doesn't kill you makes you stronger.' "
BEST NEW FAMILY
Angelina Jolie adopted 7-month-old Ethiopian orphan Zahara on July 6, giving 4-year-old son Maddox a sister and beau Brad Pitt a new object of affection. And though the actor isn't officially a parent, Pitt – who opened his Malibu home to the trio – has been a "natural dad," according to a source, and has taken to watching the kids (with a baby bottle in his pocket) while Jolie is filming The Good Shepherd.
"My body is definitely an accomplishment," says Jessica Simpson, who wowed people with her toned physique, courtesy of her "Don't Eat Crap" diet and visits to the gym six days a week for a month for her Daisy Duke role. But while she was working her butt off, boy-of-summer Jake Gyllenhaal was hitting the surf, keeping his muscles toned on the Malibu and Maui coasts. "Exercise is a natural high," says Gyllenhaal, who'll play a Marine in the upcoming drama Jarhead.
"I am deeply ashamed and upset that I've hurt Sienna," Jude Law said in a public apology after salacious details of his affair with nanny Daisy Wright (who called him a "great lover") were revealed in the London papers on July 17. Since then, Miller and Law have been in talks that have sometimes left her in tears, but the actress has yet to put back on his $35,000 engagement ring.
The must-have look of the summer? That pregnancy glow. And Jennifer Garner, Britney Spears and Heidi Klum all had it as they enjoyed watching their burgeoning bellies grow. Look for them to make strollers the next big accessory as they welcome their babies: Garner, this winter; Spears, in September; and Klum, any day now.
BEST EXTENDED VACATION
Greece! Monaco! Italy! Paris Hilton and Paris Latsis turned their May 25 engagement into one long global party as they toured Europe by yacht and private plane for two months, wrapping up their festivities in New York's Hamptons. The pair (top, in Saint-Tropez; bottom, in Monte Carlo) have yet to set a wedding date, but Hilton nixes the notion that there's trouble between the two, saying, "Paris and I never fight."
WORST "CASE CLOSED"
He was acquitted on June 13 of child molestation charges, but Michael Jackson is facing new accusations from a New Orleans man who says at 18 he was abused by the singer at the 1984 World's Fair. Meanwhile, two jurors in his Santa Maria, Calif., trial – who have been called "traitors" by their peers – have said they regret their verdict. "No doubt in my mind whatsoever, that boy was molested," says Eleanor Cook of the then-13-year-old accuser.
BEST (OR WORST) TREND
Bicoastal celebrities didn't pioneer the look, but prairie-girl style made its way down Rodeo Drive and Fifth Avenue as the ubiquitous long skirt (on Kirsten Dunst) hit the streets along with cowboy hats (on Beyoncé) and boots (on Lindsay Lohan). Throw in some oversized shades and big beads, and call it a trend: boho chic.
After just 10 months of dating and with only a handful of guests present, Daredevil costars Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner got hitched on June 29 in the Turks and Caicos Islands in the quietest wedding of the season – so quiet that not even her parents attended. The marriage is "too sweet to read about or dissect or talk about," Garner, who is due this winter with their first child, has said.
Pop divas Christina Aguilera (left) and Madonna got tough breaks this summer: In July, the "Beautiful" singer sliced two tendons in her right hand on a piece of glass in L.A., while the Material Mom suffered several broken bones when she was thrown off a horse during a 47th birthday ride outside London on Aug. 16. But even casts couldn't hold them back. Madonna "could be doing yoga tomorrow," her rep joked, while Aguilera was hitting the dance clubs.
"I'm ready to move on," cyclist Lance Armstrong told the press before riding into his seventh consecutive Tour de France victory in Paris on July 24 – and then retiring. The 33-year-old Texan, who overcame testicular cancer, finished with a comfortable 4:30 lead and celebrated with his biggest fans: rocker girlfriend Sheryl Crow and his kids, son Luke, 5, and twins Grace and Isabelle, 3. Next up: fund raising for cancer research via the Lance Armstrong Foundation.
