Has Roberto Benigni finally gone too far? When the Oscar-winning clown dined with the Clintons at a Nov. 19 gala dinner in Florence, he goofed around so shamelessly in front of political leaders and TV cameras — he even hugged Bill and Hillary — that ever since the evening Italian news commentators have been complaining bitterly about him. Political leftists accuse him of “groveling” to the powerful, while conservatives cite him for playing the undignified “court jester.” “Do you finally understand that life is not always beautiful?” the daily, Il Foglio, editorialized recently. Benigni’s agent, Cristiana Caimmi, said the “Life Is Beautiful” star and director was traveling abroad and unavailable for comment.
