Benedict Cumberbatch is making it really hard for adoring fans to stay mad about his recent engagement.

When asked how he felt about breaking scores of hearts by proposing to theater director and actress Sophie Hunter, he replied, “Fine in the sense that I made one person’s heart, the most important person’s, happy,” he told reporters at the New York City premiere of The Imitation Game Monday night.

The premiere marked the couple’s first public appearance since news of their engagement broke last week, which they shared the old-fashioned way, with an announcement in The Times.

While Cumberbatch, 38, was extremely busy at the premiere and afterparty – which was held at Tavern on The Green – he managed to find a few minutes to shower Hunter with affection.

Cumberbatch also told PEOPLE that he wants to be involved in the wedding planning and confirmed that he has a vision for the nuptials – even if he would not divulge on what he has in mind.

His fans are both excited – and dreading – to see what he has in store.
