Newly released images taken by photographer Mark Makela during a November 2014 visit give voters a glimpse inside the former neurosurgeon’s eight-bedroom, 12-bathroom home, where the columns are plated in gold leaf and the walls are covered with photos and portraits of Carson himself.
Some of the highlights include an autographed photo of the GOP hopeful with then-president George W. Bush and wife Laura Bush, taken at the White House in 2008 when Carson received the Presidential Medal of Freedom; a photo of Carson with Cuba Gooding Jr., who played the doctor in the 2009 made-for-TV movie Gifted Hands: The Ben Carson Story; and – our personal favorite – a painting of Carson with a white robe-rocking Jesus.
Also among the decor is a marble engraving of a biblical proverb in which the word “proverb” is glaringly misspelled.
Step into the family room of Carson’s mansion – which sits on 48 acres in Upperco, Maryland – and you’ll see a wall dedicated to the doctor himself, with dozens of awards, plaques, diplomas, framed magazine articles and honorary doctorate degrees.
“It took me around 12 hours to put all these up,” the 64-year-old’s wife, Lacena “Candy” Carson told Baltimore magazine in 2009. “I wanted it to be art – not just a bunch of plaques on the walls – and I still have so many to put up that are still in storage.”
Sounds like they’re going to need a bigger shrine – er, house.
