They’ve been dealing with a difficult divorce – and the thermometer in Orlando in August has been over 90 degrees. But Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck still managed to put their kids first last weekend, taking Violet, 9, Seraphina, 6, and Samuel, 3, to Universal Studios Florida and Disney World to celebrate Affleck’s 43rd birthday. “They are both making the best of a hard situation,” a source close to the couple tells PEOPLE.

While witnesses have said the couple looked tense, the source points out the outings wouldn’t be easy for any parent, and the famous couple also had to contend with gawkers. “It’s hard to get through an amusement park sometimes with three kids,” said the source. “It’s not always easy, especially when there are a lot of onlookers.” The most important thing to Affleck and Garner: “They did it together and the kids had a great time, which is what they both wanted.”

The family spent the weekend visiting the various Florida theme parks. They started at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal on Saturday (Affleck even sported a Harry Potter t-shirt) and continued the festivities at Fantasyland in Disney World Monday, where they took the kids on the Dumbo the Flying Elephant ride twice.

One onlooker applauded the two parents for sticking together during this hard time.

“Looks like a family to me, with a very brave face.”
