Before he became a husband and father, Ben Affleck was one of Hollywood’s most eligible bachelors.
With his high-profile celebrity girlfriends – including Gwyneth Paltrow and Jennifer Lopez – Affleck became a tabloid staple, making headlines for his partying (he went to rehab in 2001) and taste for gambling.
But when he reconnected with Jennifer Garner on the set of their 2003 film, Daredevil, friends say his reputation didn’t worry the actress. “She was clean-cut and seemed to be attracted to that part of him – the ‘bad boy,’ ” a source told PEOPLE in this week’s cover story. “Jen knew what she was getting into when she met Ben.”
Garner’s friends say she was attracted to the actor’s “magnetic personality.” “Ben is very charming and he can turn it on,” says one friend. “Their relationship in the beginning was a good one.”
But their differences became too much. Garner got “fed up” with Affleck’s troubling behavior, sources close to her say in PEOPLE’s cover story, while another source close to the couple contends that Garner became “controlling.”
The two announced their divorce on June 30, one day after their 10-year wedding anniversary. On Tuesday, Affleck flew to Atlanta to spend time with the couple’s three kids, Violet, 9, Seraphina, 6 and Samuel, 3, who are with Garner while she is working on her next film, Miracles from Heaven. Affleck plans to attend Comic-Con International in San Diego this weekend to promote Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.
