Celebrity Barbie, A Gold Digger? By People Staff Published on February 1, 1999 12:00 AM Share Tweet Pin Email A diamond-encrusted Barbie doll will be sold at auction at Christie’s London today — with a price tag of nearly $35,000. Diamond Barbie, the most expensive of her type in the world, was created by the toymaker Mattel and mining company De Beers to celebrate the doll’s 40th anniversary. The specially-commissioned doll is dressed in a turquoise gown studded with nine diamonds and a dazzling assortment of mini-jewelry, including two diamond brooches, a pair of diamond earrings and a diamond ring. (The total weight of her 160 jewels is nearly 20 carats.) She will go under the hammer as part of the “TV Generation” sale, along with other British toy favorites such as the Pink Panther, Muffin the Mule and Noddy.
