James Cromwell, who co-starred with a pig in the original “Babe” and its sequel, joined an animal-rights group in accusing a North Carolina farm of beating and killing hogs illegally. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals released a videotape showing farmhands bludgeoning sows with iron bars, metal canes and wrenches. In one scene, a worker kills a lame hog by dropping a cinder block on its head The videotape was narrated by Cromwell, who played Farmer Hoggett in the film about a pig who thinks he’s a sheep-herding dog. Cromwell, a vegetarian, nearly broke down in tears at a news conference. “Pigs are sensitive, intelligent animals,” Cromwell said. “If you are moved at all by this film, please do your part. Stop eating pigs.”
