The Simon Wiesenthal Center in Los Angeles, a leading crusader against discrimination, has lodged a complaint against a “B.C.” comic strip that the group says slurs Jews. The offending strip is scheduled to run this Sunday, Easter, and depicts a lit menorah (a Jewish candelabra) below a phrase attributed in the Bible to Jesus as he was being crucified on the cross: “Father, forgive them: for they know not what they do.” The Wiesenthal Center is urging newspapers not to run it. “B.C.” cartoonist, Johnny Hart, and the strip’s distributor, Creators Syndicate, insisted to Reuters that the panel was intended as a tribute to both Judaism and Christianity and is not meant to offend anyone.
