As bride-to-be Avril Lavigne prepares to marry Nickelback’s Chad Kroeger in a "spectacular" themed wedding, she’s focusing on enjoying the process, rather than stressing out.

“I’ve been very busy planning the wedding, but I’m enjoying every moment of it,” Lavigne, 28, told PEOPLE at Tuesday’s Nylon magazine and Aloft Hotels concert celebration at New York’s Highline Ballroom.

“I’m promoting my new record at the same time, so there’s been a lot on my plate. When there’s a lot going on, I always take the time to enjoy it and not to let it fly by. So I’m making sure to have fun and not let it get overwhelming.”

Although the “Here’s To Never Growing Up” singer, who’s sporting a 14-carat engagement ring, won’t reveal details of her upcoming nuptials to Kroeger, 38, Lavigne says she’s calling the shots when it comes to their special day.

“Chad is on board with all my ideas,” she says. “He knows that I have my own vision for the wedding and he likes what I like. He’s down with whatever I’m down with. We have a lot in common, so it’s been easier.”

The couple, both Canadian, got engaged on Aug. 8, after dating for six months.

When asked what she loves about her fiancé, Lavigne said, “He’s very romantic and very attentive. He’s a really nice and a good person. And he’s very supportive of my music and my career, and that means a lot to me.”
