Project Runway‘s Ashley Nell Tipton made history by putting on the show’s first plus-size finale collection, and then went on to be the first plus-size designer to win the entire competition.

The designer – who covers the December issue of Skorch magazine – says the overall response to her boundary-breaking win has been positive.

“It’s nice to see how much the mainstream fashion community has been so accepting of it,” Tipton, 24, told the magazine. “It’s very exciting to see that folks finally want to make plus-size mainstream.”

The San Diego, California, native hopes her upcoming collection will revolutionize the world of plus-size fashion.

“I’m turning this industry around and making clothing that we’ve been wanting and needing,” she said. “It’ll be a reflection of garments that I’d wear, that I know other plus-size women would wear too!”

Tipton also spoke about her signature purple hair – and said she has no intention of changing it any time soon.

“The purple is definitely permanent,” she said. “Time to time I think about changing it up. I’ve done many colors over the years. However, if and when I do change, it’ll likely still be in the pastel color family.”
