Tuesday’s shocker that Arnold Schwarzenegger fathered a child with a member of his household staff more than a decade ago “was something he felt needed to be told” to his wife, Maria Shriver, a source close to the former governor of California tells PEOPLE.

The politician – who has also been working hard on a return to his big-screen career – is “trying to make this right with his family.”

Whether or not the couple’s relationship can be salvaged is a question that hasn’t yet been answered, but on Tuesday Shriver called this a “"painful and heartbreaking time."

As for Schwarzenegger’s state of mind, “He feels very bad about the situation,” said the source. He is “fully prepared to do whatever he needs to do to rebuild [his family’s] trust.”

Last week, Schwarzenegger and Shriver, who have four children together, announced their separation after 25 years of marriage.
