Ty Pennington, the energetic team leader with the soul patch from Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, is recovering from an appendectomy he underwent Saturday in his hometown of Atlanta, where he was taping an episode of the hit ABC show.

He is expected to be released Tuesday, but said in a statement that the episode being filmed – about a home with serious plumbing problems in Lake City, Ga. – will continue as planned, despite his surgery.

“I don’t want to let the family down, and all of us with the show want to give them the new house they deserve,” said Pennington, 40. “Thanks to phones and emails, I will be able to maintain my part by giving input to the other designers and discussing our plans for the house. I am just so glad this happened in Atlanta, where I have so much support from my family and friends.”

ABC executive Andrea Wong added, according to Atlanta station WSB-TV: “We couldn’t be more relieved to know that Ty is going to be safe and sound. And while it may surprise some, to us it sounds just typical that he wouldn’t want to slow things down.”

There is no word on when Pennington will again be up and running.
