The Voice Star Anthony Riley's Death Ruled a Suicide
The body of the former contestant on The Voice was found on Friday
The Voice contestant Anthony Riley‘s death has been deemed a suicide, PEOPLE has learned. The Philadelphia Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed that the musician hanged himself.
The 28-year-old’s body was reportedly found in the basement of his apartment building in Center City.
Riley, a popular street performer in Philadelphia, was chosen by all four judges immediately after belting out James Brown’s “I Got You (I Feel Good)” during his audition. He left the show in January to seek help for his struggle with substance abuse.
His family could not be reached for comment, but his sister Halima Miley told the Philadelphia Inquirer there will be a public memorial.
“The city was his family. Everybody knew him, he couldn’t walk two steps without someone saying, ‘Anthony, how you doin’?’ ” she told the Inquirer. “The public loved him.”
