Angelina Jolie to U.S., Brad Pitt Stays in Africa
The Mr. and Mrs. Smith costars go separate ways after photos of them together are published
Angelina Jolie is back in the United States after a weekend in which photographs of her with Brad Pitt on a beach in Africa were printed in British tabloids.
The actress taped a television interview on Monday in New York City to help promote the upcoming Mr. and Mrs. Smith in which she costars with Pitt. He is still in Africa.
Over the weekend, pictures of Pitt and Joile, who have both repeatedly denied rumors of an affair, were published in the British tabloid The Sun. The photos feature Pitt, Jolie and her 3-year-old son, Maddox, playing in the sand on a beach in Kenya.
Last week Pitt, 41, who split from wife Jennifer Aniston in January, began a new humanitarian mission, visiting Ethiopia and South Africa as a celebrity ambassador for DATA, the campaign founded by Bono to promote AIDS awareness and economic reform in Africa.
Jolie, 29, is a longtime humanitarian. A U.N. goodwill ambassador, she adopted Maddox from a Cambodian orphanage in 2002.
So far this year, Pitt and Jolie have been careful to avoid being photographed together. In March, they promoted Mr. and Mrs. Smith at the annual ShoWest convention for theater owners in Las Vegas. Though the pair chatted amiably backstage, their public appearance was carefully choreographed. They arrived on a private jet from L.A. with studio execs, entered the hotel through a loading dock and kept their distance while introducing a Smith clip.
“We’re really happy to bring you our film. Maybe a couple of you have heard of it,” Pitt joked.
During a magazine photo shoot that same month, “the only time Brad and Angelina came in contact was to take a picture,” one onlooker told PEOPLE. Otherwise they kept to separate trailers and separate rooms at a nearby hotel.
Yet “there was definitely that wink-wink feeling on the set,” a source told PEOPLE. At one point a member of the crew tried to set the mood by playing Frank Sinatra’s “Love and Marriage” on the stereo. “The whole set was laughing – even Brad and Angelina,” said the source. “They just kind of snickered.”
